Chriss story - couch potato to professional coach!

Chris hasnt always worked in the fitness industry; in fact he hasnt always been in great shape. A few years ago he was an over-worked businessman approaching middle age. He had no regular exercise since leaving school 20 years before, and hated PE lessons even then.

Over the years, I had become extremely unfit, and at nearly four stone over-weight had very little energy or vitality, says Chris. I felt tired and stressed most of the time and suffered with aches and pains that had been getting progressively worse for a long time. Basically, I felt like I was a mess!

At the age of 35, Chris decided he had to do something about it. So, he joined a local gym. Finding it hard to maintain at first, he worked with a few personal trainers, but found that they pushed him too hard too soon, and he ended up hating the session (and them!) and feeling demoralised.

In the end, I took control of my own training and decided to exercise regularly, but at an intensity I could manage - even though that was at a very low level at the start, he says. From then on, my journey to health was challenging enough to be of benefit but manageable enough to be fun.

Over the course of the next year, through a progressive program of healthy eating and exercise Chris lost all the extra weight he was carrying and made radical improvements in his strength, fitness, muscle tone and posture.

I felt so much better and actually enjoyed the process so much that I decided to make a permanent career change, and undertook several courses of study to become a qualified personal trainer, he says.

I am now over 40 and in the best shape of my life. Ive turned back the biological clock and look and feel younger than I did before I started exercising.

Chris has been working in the health and fitness industry for several years now, but has never forgotten what its like to be unfit, and will always have a strong empathy for newcomers to exercise.

I know from first hand experience that for exercise to be both effective and sustainable, you need to find the right level of challenge for you without over-training and putting yourself off, he says. Thats been the key to success with my fitness and with my clients.
