Small Designs is a collaboration between Ewhurst-based husband and wife team Deej and Small Carter, creating unique objects from reclaimed wood

Small Designs began 15 years ago, inspired by a delivery of centuries-old oak, which was destined as firewood. Small’s early designs were for picture frames, model boats and sculptures, but now incorporate Deej’s carpentry skills on the lathe to turn vases and candlesticks too. Customers can also order bespoke pieces.

The raw materials are reclaimed oak, fencing, fence posts and floorboards. “Each piece is unique and has its own story,” says Small. “The shape of the bits and bobs I have found often dictate what they will become. You often find beautiful grains and patterns underneath when you take off the layers.”
