I work unusual hours and look after my kids most days so there is always a juggling act going on trying to keep up with their busy lives and mine. In a way, my weekends start the moment I drop Rosie, 14, and Charlie, 13, at Heathside School, Weybridge, on Friday mornings.
I try to keep Fridays free from squash playing and teaching to give the old body a rest. I like to go for a walk with my girlfriend and then have a coffee or lunch out. Our favourite places to stroll are along the river from Walton to Molesey, across the fields behind Polesden Lacey or further afield at Witley from where we will head in to Farnham for a bite.
The weekend temporarily ends abruptly at 3pm when I pick up the children, sometimes with friends, and take them to their various activities. Rosie loans a horse, which is kept at
a picturesque stables in Ripley, behind the green. Charlie will often head to St Georges Hill Lawn Tennis Club for a practice at squash. Both my eldest son Joe, 21, and I are pros and Charlie definitely has the talent to keep the dynasty alive!
Tickling the ivories
I then try and attend my piano lesson with Janis in Molesey at 5pm. Im shocking and never practice as the weeks fly by and, before I know it, its piano time again! I pay to get scolded and vow to impress her next week.
Friday nights, I either have a gig with my band or a social night arranged. Often, my girlfriend and I will have a meal together or socialise with friends. We like the Siam Paragon in Hampton Court and recently enjoyed Casa Romana in Weybridge.
Most Saturdays, Rosie works at a stables in Ockham helping small children with their riding. I drop her off at 9am and then head for St Georges Hill where I teach a few individuals squash. I have worked at the club part-time for 22 years and enjoy the ambiance and the superb facilities; not least our new all-glass squash court.
Saturday afternoons are dedicated to chilling out and often falling asleep, sometimes whilst watching sport. I occasionally watch football live at diverse venues such as Selhurst Park (Palace are my team), Craven Cottage (they can play a bit), Griffin Park (its cheap) or The Madejski (everywhere is sold out).
Saturday night is often a gig night. Usually, its a function at a golf or tennis club. My six-piece band have fun and aim to please with our dance rock.
Then, Sunday morning is Junior Squash and Im on court at 9.45am, often after a late finish at the gig. I rarely drink so Im quite fresh for the kids and love seeing them improve so I see this free session as my contribution back to the game that has been my living for 31 years.
I may play a few holes of golf, hit at tennis or go for another walk on Sunday afternoons often followed by a trip to Caf Rouge for a cappuccino and a steak!
Sunday evenings, I catch up with e-mails and chill with the kids while watching TV.
