I am a big fan of starting the weekends as soon as possible – preferably on a Friday morning as I have every second Friday off. I wake up feeling normal after a proper night’s sleep not interrupted by the usual 3.45am alarm, scoot the kids out the door and do the school drop-off near Ham, then it’s on to Richmond Park for a run with a couple of my mum friends, Sarah and Nicky. The park is gorgeous at that time of the morning – I love it! So does my rescue dog Maddie as it’s full of great deer smells!

Feeling set up for the weekend, I then have 10,000 chores to do as I am renovating our house in New Malden. We back onto the cricket ground of Malden Wanderers – it’s a lovely spot – in fact we loved it so much that when we sold our old house we only moved six houses down the road. We now face the wicket and we have a fabulous view from our back wall – it’s such an English scene. In my job, I’ve interviewed a lot of Surrey cricketers who’ve gone on to play for England and they’ve all played at our ground at one time or another. The house is getting there slowly – and I try to support local Surrey businesses as I go.

My builder Dennis is from New Malden, the new kitchen is from Surrey Kitchens in Byfleet, the fireplaces came from Grate Expectations in Merton Park (not Surrey but almost), the roof tiles for the extension came from a reclamation yard in Leatherhead (what a fun afternoon that was trying to match up our 80-year-old roofing – but they did it!) and they know my name at Farrow and Ball paints in Richmond; I’m there every other day it seems. If I’m buying paint, I’ll always pop into Maison across the road as well, which is a sort of French/Swedish style interiors shop – it’s my favourite guilty pleasure. I’ve just bought a chandelier for the kitchen from there and can’t wait until the house is ready and I can hang it!

Friday night takeaways
We haven’t got our kitchen in yet and are cooking on a camper stove but there’s always a takeaway of sorts on a Friday night. We are spoiled for choice in New Malden so it’s either a curry from Lal Akash, a Thai from Ohaio at New Malden Station or Chinese from Noodle Express along the High Street. For a glass of wine, it’s always our local pub The Glass House, who do great food. Myself and my husband Eduardo will walk down with Maddie the dog and sometimes on a Friday meet my sisters Lorraine and Susan there – they live locally as well with their families so it’s a ready-made party when we meet up.

If I need to buy something specific on a Saturday, I will go to Kingston early in the morning. My favourite shop is Bentalls just because they sell everything. But to be honest the weekend is usually dominated by my three children, Amelia, 14, Tiago, 11 and Jorge, 10, playing sports, whether it’s little league football, athletics or tennis tournaments all around Surrey. I cover a lot of tennis for Sky and it’s inspired my children. My youngest is one of the top 10-year-olds in the county and plays every day at the Westside club in Wimbledon, which serves the best Bolognese you’ve ever eaten but the best cakes by a mile are at Carshalton Tennis Club!

As a former Olympic gymnast myself, I am very over excited about London 2012! My Games was Los Angeles in 1984, which seems a lifetime ago now, and the whole family can’t wait for this Games to start. They will be the first that my boys remember so as a family we will be there to see a glimpse of the cyclists as they race through Richmond Park and to see the Olympic Torch on its journey to the stadium… well, that kind of inspiration doesn’t come around very often, does it!
