Surrey art promoters AppArt hold their annual exhibition at Prior’s Field School in Godalming this month – and a new artist to the show presents his wonderful ‘wire pictures’ for the first time. Mike Topham, from Haslemere, works as a garden designer by day, but spends his spare time creating his elaborate artworks.

“My wire pictures began life as presents for family and friends, and the nature of the material, combined with humorous ideas, makes for endless possibilities,” says Mike.
“Each picture is individually made in various gauges of copper wire, which are positioned and soldered before cleaning, painting and fixing into a mount.”
Mike spent 20 years in the Middle East working in landscapes, interiors, conceptual design and architectural drawing before returning to the UK in 1996 and focusing on his work as a garden designer. Despite his busy work life, he continued to explore his creative interests too.
“I experimented in a variety of mediums, including wire, plaster, paper and clay, and I found the wire easy to work with,” he continues. “My wire pictures are based on simple and humorous things in everyday life and are often inspired by a phrase, saying or childhood memory.”
Mike exhibits with the Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire Craft Guilds and is delighted to be part of the AppArt exhibition this year. See his work online at miketopham.co.uk
