Lucy Alexander on her perfect Surrey weekend

As the presenter of the popular BBC TV show Homes Under the Hammer as well as Surrey Life’s resident property expert, Lucy Alexander is a busy lady. When she does get a weekend off, she likes nothing more than spending quality time with her husband Stewart and their two children Kitty and Leo at home in Thames Ditton
We’ve lived in Thames Ditton for many years and I can safely say I have fallen in love with village life. There is such a sense of community where we live and whether I’m popping into The Lime Tree deli for a cappuccino or to The Red Lion for a spot of lunch, there is always a friendly face to greet me. The children are also blessed with an incredible range of activities that they can access in the local area and we have made some really good friends through both Kitty’s and Leo’s schools.
Typically, Friday nights will either involve a lovely meal at home, either with friends and family or just the four of us. If we are feeling really lazy, we will order a cheeky Indian take-away from The Rose restaurant and just chill out with some music, games or a film.
With the weeks being taken up by a hectic filming schedule and driving the kids to their various sporting and drama activities, at the weekend I always try to build in some exercise for myself. So when I’ve taken my daughter Kitty to her drama class at the Rose Theatre in Kingston and my son Leo to his football training at Wimbledon FC Academy – the club where his Dad used to play in the premier league – then I can have some ‘me’ time. I love going for a bike ride with my girlfriends to nearby Richmond Park or I book myself into a spinning class at Colets Health and Fitness in Thames Ditton, where the instructor, Stephan, pushes me to my fitness limits!
The afternoons are really varied because if the kids have been invited to a party then we stay local, enjoying a stroll along the river or a walk in Bushy Park. We like to walk wherever we can and make the most of all the wonderful green space that the area offers.
Saturday nights can be anything from indulging in a delicious dinner at the local Italian restaurant to heading in to London and soaking up the atmosphere and music at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho. Whatever fun is had on a Saturday night, I love nothing more than knowing that I’m going to wake up in my bed, ready to start another day in Thames Ditton.
As we’ve recently moved house to a waterside property, we are making the most of our access down to the Thames and will regularly take the kayaks out with the kids and paddle up and down the river, stopping at the odd pub or café and enjoying the scenery as we go.
On Sunday, often after a lunch at The Swan pub, we might go for a swim in the family-friendly swimming pool at Colets or take the kids to the cinema in Esher, winding down to a peaceful end of the day so we can recharge our batteries for the start of another busy week ahead.
