Name: Guildford Speakers Club
Location: The Guildford Institute, Ward Street, Guildford GU1 4LH
In a nutshell: Part of the worldwide group Toastmasters International, Guildford Speakers Club helps its members to improve at public speaking, while also honing other skills such as leadership and storytelling.
Person interviewed: Vanessa King
Role in group: President
Member of club for: Two years
Joined because I was a stay-at-home mum and heard about Toastmasters through an interview on BBC Surrey radio. I went along to my local meeting and decided to join because of the warm atmosphere and the friendly people who were so interesting to talk to.

When was the club set up?
Guildford Speakers Club was set up in about 1995 to give members the chance to develop speaking and leadership skills while also having a great time.

How many members do you have?
We have around 50 members at the moment, and we have about two new members joining us each month. Members and visitors often say were a really good group of people; both friendly and welcoming. Its a very safe place to try things out and learn from both ones own actions and those of the other members.

Where do you meet?
We meet on the first, third and fifth Tuesday of the month at the Guildford Institute, Ward Street, Guildford, starting at 7.30pm.

Whats the best thing about being a member of the club?
The best thing about being a member of Guildford Speakers Club is the opportunity to meet new people with all sorts of different backgrounds and occupations. We make good friendships, its a very supportive place with opportunities to develop and theres always fun and laughter.

Do you find being surrounded by like-minded individuals inspiring?
Very much so. I learn a lot every time I go; not just from the speeches but also from the evaluations and being in the company of different people who teach me new things.

Have you got links with other clubs as well?
We are part of an area with six clubs: Camberley, Woking, Mole Valley, Epsom, Farnham and the London Borough of Merton. There are many other clubs across the UK and any member of a club can visit and participate in any other club across the country and worldwide.

Whats the most interesting story from the groups history?
The most interesting story is a difficult one to choose. Weve had speeches ranging from how best to manage VAT if youre self-employed to how to blow up a tank, giving birth, being a pilot, tidal power, how to cope with rejection, a trip to Ethiopia, evaluation sessions, dealing with conflict

and the funniest?
See above! We always have a laugh at our meetings; its difficult to choose
one thing.

When is your next event that is open to the public/potential new members?
All our meetings are open to the public. Everyone is welcome to come along at any time.

Describe your club to us in five words...
Fun, educational, inspirational, friendly, supportive.
