Private client lawyer, William Marriott is Head of Private Property at Charles Russell Speechlys LLP in Guildford. He advises clients about private property acquisitions, disposals and investment property portfolios

What is your role at Charles Russell Speechlys?

I lead the private property team in Guildford, which consists of a team of five specialist solicitors supported by two paralegals. Our combined expertise means that clients can benefit from our specialist knowledge and technical know-how in respect of country houses and a wide range of residential property matters.

Charles Russell Speechlys is one of the leading law firms in the South East. We have highly experienced lawyers who are experts in wider areas such as agriculture and landed estates, employment, commercial property and litigation. This makes life simple for our clients as all transactions can be dealt with seamlessly from our Guildford office – often more local for clients than London.

Why is it important to use a law firm with country house and landed estate experience?

Property matters are often not as straightforward as anticipated and having an experienced team makes all the difference in terms of delivering the required outcome on time and to budget. For example, I recently acted for a client on the purchase of a Grade 1 listed Jacobean palace in Northamptonshire called Apethorpe Palace. It was a highly complex transaction from English Heritage, involving expertise from our teams in landed estates, construction and employment. It was essential that we delivered commercial, timely advice to ensure our client achieved the best possible outcome – which is exactly what we offer to all our clients.
