Having spent more than two decades repairing trumpets, Will Spencer started assembling his own – and each one comes with his personal seal of approval

Every trumpet which passes through Will Spencer’s Elstead workshop is tested at every level of construction. “I don’t let a trumpet out unless I’ve blown it myself,” he says. “Every time I play a gig I can take a new one out with me to test it.”

Will already supplies the RAF and has sent herald trumpets to the Beijing Army. His customers come from as far afield as Sao Paulo, Munich and Denmark. He is taking five new trumpet models to the US later this month. “The actual assembly of the trumpets can be done in a day,” he says. “A lot of parts are pre-made in the US and Taiwan. But I have to get the sound exactly right and that can take the time – anything from five minutes to a week. All my trumpets are one-offs. No instrument is exactly the same.”
