Dame Judi Dench becomes Surrey Wildlife Trust patron

PUBLISHED: 13:04 23 July 2014 | UPDATED: 16:06 17 December 2015

The Oscar winning actress Dame Judi Dench has become a patron of Surrey Wildlife Trust.

The 79-year-old Outwood resident, who is also the most nominated actress in BAFTA history, is backing the charity’s campaign to secure the future of Nower Wood nature reserve near Leatherhead.

“As a local Surrey resident with a love of wildlife, I’m delighted to be supporting Surrey Wildlife Trust and its Nower Wood New Build Project,” says Dame Judi.

“I also recognise the importance of outdoor education and the need to inspire the next generation about wildlife and conservation.”

Nower Wood is at the heart of SWT’s Wildlife Education programme, which now reaches over 15,000 children a year.

Set within ancient semi-natural woodland, it provides an ‘outdoor classroom’ for delivering wildlife and environmental education for children from primary school up to A - levels.

“We are thrilled to have the backing of such a high profile and widely respected local resident,” says Tania Ord-Smith, SWT development manager.

“Unfortunately, the classrooms at the reserve were purchased forty years ago and were second hand at the time – they really are now showing their age!

“The toilets, located in a separate outdoor block, often freeze during the winter, making them unusable. This leads to cancelled bookings, a reduced teaching season and disappointed children.”

Fundraising for the rebuild is well under way and SWT have set a target of £470,000.
