The Bike Project Surrey, which refurbishes donated bikes and sells them to the local community, has received funding from the Charles Russell Speechlys Community Fund

The £2800 grant will enable the head mechanic to receive training to progress to a higher technical level, helping the social enterprise to become more financially sustainable. The funding will also contribute to the refurbishment of the Bike Project’s break room. It forms part of a larger initiative to develop the organisation’s Woking Road Depot workshop.

The Bike Project, managed by the Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership, collects unwanted bicycles from the public and other organisations and provides free skills, training and work experience for local jobseekers and young people to refurbish them. Good quality second-hand bikes are then sold to the local community at an affordable price and this income sustains the project.

Sally Ashford, partner at Charles Russell Speechlys in Guildford said: “The Bike Project has helped over 250 people in Surrey over the last five years. It is a fantastic community initiative and we are excited to support its continued development. Our grants are chosen by a panel of volunteers from across our office and there was unanimous support for this project.”

Kate Peters, grants manager at the Community Foundation for Surrey commented: “The Community Foundation has supported Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership for a number of years and we are delighted to be able to introduce the Bike Project to the Charles Russell Speechlys Community Fund. It is wonderful to see local donors such as Charles Russell Speechlys making a difference to local groups and the people in our community.”

The Charles Russell Speechlys Community Fund supports projects in and around Guildford with a focus on employment, training and skills initiatives.
