Name of club: Oxshott Village Sports Club
Location: Steels Lane, Oxshott KT22 0RF
In a nutshell: A professionally managed sports club that now incorporates nine sections: bowls, bridge, cricket, football, netball, ptanque, squash, stoolball and tennis. Open all year, there are juniors and seniors, and theres a bar and changing facilities inside the clubhouse.
Name of person interviewed: Bob Gasston
Role in group: Club manager
Member of club for: Employed since May 2004 but a member since 1997.
Why did you join initially? To play more tennis!
When was the club set up?
Cricket has been played here since 1896, but the club itself was formed in 1919.
How many members are there?
Approximately 1,400 members involved with nine different sports. Tennis is our biggest participation sport, followed by squash.
Whats the best thing about being a member of the club?
The excellent facilities and theres a good social atmosphere too.
Do you find it inspiring being surrounded by other like-minded individuals?
Its always good to be in a healthy environment with fellow like-minded sports players enjoying our chosen hobby all year round.
Have you got links with other clubs too?
All our sports sections play matches against other clubs and we play friendly matches as well. We also run inter-section events to encourage participation in other sports and members from different sections to socialise with each other.
Whats the most interesting story from the groups history?
Its very difficult to highlight one particular thing as we are a multi-sport club with a long history. However, it is nice that we have a long history and its good to see how sports and facilities have developed, and new sports have been introduced, over the years.
We are an accredited club achieving standards and awards in various sports, and have our club marks from the Lawn Tennis Association, England & Wales Cricket Board and the Football Association, among others. However, we have members aged from two years to 92 years so theres a huge variation in ages and abilities!
and the funniest?
It wasnt funny at the time, but in February 2008, with the Clubs AGM about to start, to call the members to order I banged a bottle on the table. However, the small bottle of lager was still full at the time and very fizzy when shaken. Consequently, members not only heard the banging on the table but also looked on in amusement as the bottles contents managed to go everywhere including over my suit!
To follow this embarrassment, within minutes of the start of the meeting, I had to present an award to our top volunteer of the year a glass plaque on a wooden base. Up came the delighted recipient only for the two of us to manage to drop the wooden plinth, closely followed by the glass plaque, all over the floor! Not really the best of starts for an AGM. However, I can smile wryly at it now
When is your next event that is open to the public/potential new members?
Our next big event will be the Pro-Celebrity Cricket match on Friday August 5 starting at 2pm.Tickets are currently on sale for this event and will be a great chance for visitors to see the club and view our facilities.
Other than that, we dont have a date in the near future for anything specific but dependant on the season we do run open days and open events for new members.
Our biggest event is where we host the Oxshott Village Day on the first Bank Holiday in May, which has grown steadily over the years and is a chance for the local community to come and visit the club and for local community groups to exhibit.
Describe your club in five words
The best club in Surrey.
