If you’re a regular at Ascot or Epsom’s ladies’ days, then the chances are you’ll have seen one of Beverley Edmondson Millinery’s stunning headpieces – and they’re all created in the craft town of Farnham.

“I first got into millinery when I completed work experience at Angels Costumiers in London,” says Beverley. “I went into the millinery department after finding out that stitching buttons onto hundreds of extras’ suits was not the most of riveting work!

“Once there, I was immediately intrigued by the forming of three-dimensional shapes from quite everyday materials. I also became fascinated by how much a hat, or at least the right hat, gives a person a whole new persona, character and confidence.”

Since 2008, her own creations have been making their way onto the heads of the great and the good, and last year she was nominated as one of only six finalists nationwide for Niche Fashion Retailer of the Year at the prestigious Drapers Independents Awards.

“I really believe the personal service we offer is unrivalled,” says Beverley. “Yes, we have a small retail shop and it can get very busy and jostled at times, but every hat is designed around the individual we are making it for. We take into account not only the customer’s desires, but their personality, stature, insecurities, confidences, the event, the dress code and their outfit.”

As well as this attention to detail and tradition, Beverley also has one eye firmly on the future…

“I’m hugely excited by new materials and technologies in millinery, from laser-cutting to thermoplastics and 3D printing,” she says. “They open up the world of millinery to endless possibilities. If only I had more time to explore and develop them further than I have been able to so far!”

And what does the future hold then for Beverley Edmondson Millinery? Well, they’re currently expanding, both in the boutique and externally, with their first full-time retail manager allowing Beverley the chance to focus on her wholesale ranges, as well as snagging some key retailers to stock her brand.

So, one way or another, they’re aiming to stay very much ahead of the crowd – quite literally...
