Leatherhead painter Stuart Stanley has been named winner of the third Baines Surrey Artist of the Year at the New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham.

The award, which is voted for by the public, is sponsored by the Baines Charitable Trust in memory of its founder Patricia Baines. Stuart won 1,000, an Adam Aaronson Glass Trophy and the chance to run a solo exhibition at the New Ashgate Gallery in June 2012.

I had no prior expectations, as I thought the voting would go to an artist in the south west area, he says. For the exhibition, I did purposely choose to put in two paintings that I thought the public would like and I was hoping for a prize, but not first and I nearly fell over when I heard the news.

Having started off as a set designer, during which a highlight was doing the set and costume design of Stepping Out in the 1980s, he went on to work as an event designer and worked with many corporate companies including the Chase Manhattan Private Bank, where particular highlights were in venues such as the Hofburg Palace in Vienna and at the Palace of Versailles.

These days, I source inspiration for my paintings in France, especially the area around Dordogne, and I have also done a lot of work in North Cornwall, but my passion has always been trees and I am currently doing a lot of my work around Leith Hill and Ranmore, he adds.

Stuart is chairman of both Surrey Figurative Artists and Leatherhead Art Club, and also a member of the Dorking Group of Artists.
