Join Surrey Ramblers for a winter walk this festive season


There’s nothing as invigorating as a bracing winter stroll in the countryside, and with the Ramblers’ Festival of Winter Walks taking place from Saturday December 20 to Sunday January 4, there’s never been a better time to get outdoors. Here’s our pick of this year’s organised walks

Saturday December 20, 10am

The low-down: Meet in Waterhouse Lane, at the Bletchingley end, for this walk of five-and-a-half miles. There are some stiles and one steep hill along the way.

Post-walk refresher: The Whyte Hart Hotel in Bletchingley.



Polesden Lacey

Saturday December 20, 10.30am

The low-down: A winter walk around Polesden Lacey, the North Downs Way and Ranmore Common. Meet at the National Trust’s Polesden Lacey car park (parking free for NT members; £3 others).

Post-walk refresher: The King William IV on the side of Box Hill, at Mickleham (parking on the A24 roadside).




Sunday December 21, 10am

The low-down: Park in Ford Manor Road by the side of The Plough Inn for this seasonal eight-mile walk to Christmas Place and Dry Hill.

Post-walk refresher: The aforementioned The Plough Inn.



Puttenham Common

Sunday December 21, 10am

The low-down: A circular all-day walk starting from Puttenham Common top car park. Nine miles long, it features a few climbs through pine woodland, the dramatic common and pretty village of Puttenham. Enjoy a picnic lunch.

Post-walk refresher: The Good Intent in Puttenham village.




Sunday December 21, 10am

The low-down: Meet at Oaks Park tea room for this five-mile walk of Oaks Park – which comprises 85 acres of grassland, woods and gardens that were once the grounds of an 18th century house.

Post-walk refresher: The aforementioned Oaks Park tea room.




Sunday December 21, 10.30am

The low-down: A five-and-a-half mile walk, starting on the ring road near Leatherhead station. Includes a slow incline up to Norbury House, but no stiles along the route.

Post-walk refresher: The Running Horse in Leatherhead.



Banstead and Woodmansterne

Tuesday December 23, 10.30am

The low-down: Meet at the Holly Lane car park near Banstead for this five-mile walk, which heads off towards Woodmansterne and back via Banstead Woods. A bit undulating in places.

Post-walk refresher: The Ramblers Rest on Outwood Lane.



Reigate Hill and Gatton Park

Wednesday December 24, 9am

The low-down: Starting early on Christmas Eve, meet at Wray Lane car park for a bracing six-mile walk over the North Downs, returning via Gatton Park.

Post-walk refresher: The Yew Tree, part-way down Reigate Hill.



Coombe Wood

Wednesday December 24, 10.30am

The low-down: Meet at Sainsbury’s in Selsdon for this two-mile walk to the stunning ornamental gardens at Coombe Wood, which was once part of Coombe Wood House.

Post-walk refresher: The Coach House Café at Coombe Wood.




Friday December 26, 10am

The low-down: Meet and park by Godstone Pond for this six-mile walk up onto the North Downs and into Bletchingley. There’s one steep hill with steps.

Post-walk refresher: The Green Rooms of Godstone tearoom – or one of the pubs.



Happy Valley and Chaldon

Friday December 26, 10.30am

The low-down: Meet at The Fox at Coulsdon Common for this four-mile walk in the morning. From 1.30pm, there will also be a four-mile stroll around Kenley Common and Kenley Airfield.

Post-walk refresher: The aforementioned Fox at Coulsdon Common.




Saturday December 27, 10.15am

The low-down: A five-mile walk starting at Selsdon Woods Nature Reserve car 
park on Farleigh Old Road.

Post-walk refresher: The White Bear at Fickleshole.




Sunday December 28, 10am

The low-down: A 10-mile walk over Pirbright Ranges with good views, before heading back via the Basingstoke Canal. Meet at Pirbright car park. Lunch at the Harvester at Mytchett.

Post-walk refresher: The lunch spot is already chosen, but The White Hart in Pirbright could be an option later.



Warlingham and Woldingham

Sunday December 28, 10am

The low-down: Starting at the Sainsbury’s in Chelsham, this 12-mile walk follows a loop taking in Warlingham and Woldingham.

Post-walk refresher: The Horseshoe at Warlingham (Woldingham has no pubs).




Sunday December 28, 10am

The low-down: This circular morning walk starts at the Milton Heath car park, off the A25, and covers around six miles with some undulation.

Post-walk refresher: Bertram Bees, Westcott.




Tuesday December 30, 10am

The low-down: An easy, three-mile stroll through farmland around Lingfield. Meet at Gun Pit car park.

Post-walk refresher: The Cage in Lingfield.




Wednesday December 31, 10.15am

The low-down: An undulating walk of five miles from Abinger Common, with its 11th century church, and Abinger Manor, through woodlands and meadows, along Broomy Downs and back via Raikes Farm.

Post-walk refresher: The Abinger Hatch.



Epsom Downs

Thursday January 1, 10.20am

The low-down: Start the New Year with this nine-mile stroll around Epsom Downs via Mere Pond and Headley Heath. Meet at the car park at the junction of Old London Road and Tattenham Corner Road (Tea Hut car park).

Post-walk refresher: The Rubbing House, which is found on the racecourse.



Thursday January 1, 10.30am

The low-down: Get the New Year off to a good start on this two-and-a-half mile meander, starting from Bourne Hall 
car park and taking in some of Ewell’s open spaces.

Post-walk refresher: The Spring Tavern, which is found near Bourne Hall.




Friday January 2, 10am

The low-down: Enjoy an easy, circular walk of five-and-a-quarter miles across Outwood Common and the local area. Starts from the popular pub, The Bell – park at the far end of the car park or near the village windmill if not stopping for a drink after.

Post-walk refresher: The aforementioned Bell at Outwood.



Hankley Common

Saturday January 3, 10am

The low-down: Freshen up after the festive season with a healthy seven-and-a-bit mile walk over Hankley Common and by Frensham Little Pond. Meet at Hankley Common car park.

Post-walk refresher: The Duke of Cambridge in nearby Tilford.



Broomy Downs

Sunday January 4, 10.30am

The low-down: This five-and-a-half-mile walk starts at Abinger Roughs car park off the A25, before heading via Broomy Downs, across the Tillingbourne and towards Raikes Farm and Abinger Hatch, returning via Crossways Farm. Gently undulating with a few moderate climbs.

Post-walk refresher: The Wotton Hatch on the A25.
