Exciting plans to crowdfund a new colossal bronze of GF Watts’ Physical Energy equestrian sculpture have taken a step forward at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village today.

Standing four metres tall and weighing five tonnes in bronze, the new public artwork promises to be quite a sight in the Surrey countryside, as anyone who has seen the existing versions in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kensington will attest.

“As a new landmark for Surrey, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the region’s most famous artist and the unique artists’ village which Watts bequeathed to today’s visitors,” says Perdita Hunt, director of Watts Gallery Trust.

“In addition, Surrey can celebrate a strong sense of place in a hollow of the Surrey Hills, and show that Compton is worth being seen as equivalent to such famous places as Giverny in France, Polenovo in Russia and Max Lieberman’s villa in Germany.”

Watts Gallery has launched its crowd-funding campaign through the Art Fund to raise £25,000 to make the Surrey sculpture dream a reality.

In return for donations, donors will receive unique rewards which include a limited edition print by British artist and illustrator, Peter Cross; bespoke lustre tiles created exclusively for this campaign; and an opportunity to visit Pangolin Editions in Gloucestershire to see the new cast being made.

“Horses and Art both stand equal, to my mind, as being transformative catalysts for people’s lives,” says Jenny Seagrove, actress and founding trustee of the Mane Chance horse sanctuary, which neighbours Watts Gallery.

“To be able to support this campaign to place a sculpture very dear to me just around the corner from our sanctuary is an absolute honour and privilege.”

To support the Physical Energy campaign, visit between Tuesday April 25 and Tuesday May 30, 2017.
