Widely considered to be one of the most picturesque villages in Surrey, Shere has a perfect chocolate box tranquillity that has attracted visitors from far and wide

Did you know...

...that Shere has a historic connection with baseball? Experts at Surrey History Centre confirmed in 2009 that baseball was played in Britain more than 20 years before American independence – and it was all thanks to one-time Lord of the Manor in Shere, William Bray (1736-1832), who wrote about it in his diary. This is now credited as the first reference to a game, played in Guildford on March 31, 1755.

Village voice:

“Of course, it is really beautiful, but it isn’t just that,” says Julian Bailey, owner of The William Bray pub. “There is a real sense of community and continuity in Shere, which has been centred around the church and the Tillingbourne for hundreds of years. William Bray – the namesake for the pub – was quite a character. He made a real name for himself as a diarist and did a lot for the people of the area, so I thought he deserved a bit of recognition. The family are still very involved in the village now. There are some fantastic bits of Lutyens architecture here, too – quite romantic really. Apparently, he was in love with a local girl and kept coming back to build something else to impress her.”

Making the headlines…

A historic wooden footbridge running over Upper Street was recently removed after it was deemed unsafe by the local council. The picturesque wooden bridge, which had scaffolding on it for the past four or five years, was just one year away from reaching its century. The bridge will either be replaced or repaired, although the bridge’s condition means the latter is unlikely.

Grab a bite…

With two popular pubs, The William Bray (01483 202044) and The White Horse (01483 202518), the Lucky Duck tea room (01483 202445) and the long-time favourite restaurant Kinghams (01483 202168), there’s no excuse for an empty stomach.

Something to take home...

Don’t miss the Shere Shop with its treasure trove of cards and gifts in the centre of the village.

In the spotlight...

  • Hollywood descended for Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, starring Renée Zellweger, and The Holiday with Cameron Diaz, Jude Law and Kate Winslet.
  • Formula One stars Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button visited The William Bray last year for a pub quiz, and motorsport supremo Eddie Jordan’s band have even played there.
  • Peter Pan creator JM Barrie once organised a cricket team, featuring Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, to play the Shere village XI.

Getting there

Shere can be found just off the A3 – the nearest train station is at Gomshall, one mile down the road.
