The High Sheriff of Surrey 2008-09, Mrs Sally Varah, has been installed at the annual ceremony in County Hall, Kingston.

Watching over proceedings was Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, Mrs Sarah Goad.

Mrs Varah was then handed the unique Surrey badge of office by immediate past High Sheriff, Mr Nicholas Sealy.
Her late husband, Michael Varah, had been nominated for the office, but following his sudden death in April 2007, his wife was asked to step into the role.

"Accepting the nomination allows me not only to honour Michael's memory but also to attempt to fulfil the year as High Sheriff in the way that he had been planning with just a little 'twist' of my own!" she said, speaking at the dinner that followed the installation ceremony;
