Harlequins rugby players will serve up mulled wine and hot chocolate at this years River of Lights community event at Millmead Island, behind the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, in Guildford.
This magical occasion will take place on Friday December 21, 6pm to 8pm, to celebrate the winter solstice and provide time for people of all age groups to reflect on last year and think about their hopes and dreams for the year ahead.
Millmead Island is the perfect setting for the event an ideal spot to get away from the neon commercial glare of Christmas and have some quite reflection time, says Simon Strong, the events creator. River of Lights is a free, non-denominational event an opportunity for people across the community to join together.
Its a beautiful and thought provoking event, which is proving to be very popular. Last year, around 600 people turned up. As only 500 people are allowed on the island at any one time, we have extended the time this year to allow more people to have the opportunity to take part!
During the event, attendees have the opportunity to place floating lanterns on the River Wey and can also write down their wishes for the year ahead and post them in a stunning 12ft column of fire.
The Harlequins players, who train at Surrey Sports Park, will be joined by local choirs performing wassailing songs, children from The Royal Surrey and pantomime stars from the Yvonne Arnaud theatre.
