The Purley way
Over 120 years ago, Purley estate agent William Webb purchased 260 acres of suburban land and transformed it into his utopian vision of a garden village for the first generation of wealthy London commuters. This project became the Webb Estate.
Whats the rush?
The Purley Way is one of the best-known (and at times dreaded) roads around. Originally designed as a bypass for Croydon, it went down in history as being the first road in the UK to be lit with sodium lights. The giant Swedish furniture store IKEA is hard to miss, too, dominated by two huge landmark towers. Just try to avoid their shopping induced rush hours!

Burgers at Blacks claim Europes biggest burger challenge, comprising almost 7Ib of prime beef encased in a 6Ib bap, with nine slices of mature cheddar and nine rashers of bacon. All for free if you eat the lot on your own!
While youre there...
...the nearby Kenley Airfield, which was an important base in World War Two and has been identified by English Heritage as the most complete fighter airfield associated with the Battle of Britain to have survived.
Purleys excellent Buenos Aires Steakhouse (0208 660 5200) at Tudor Court was the first of a small chain.
The Jolly Farmers is a pleasant, old style English pub (0208 660 2076).
Hallmark Hotel Croydon (0208 680 1999) on Purley Way, which is set on another old airport (formerly the Aerodrome Hotel)
Status Quo rocker Francis Rossi lives on the aforementioned estate.
Found just off the A23 (the Purley Way) and with great train links.
