Some might say that the best way to ruin family relations is to break out a game of Monopoly and unleash the cut-throat business people within, but at least you can now argue over your favourite Guildford landmarks.

Our county town triumphed over its closest rival, Windsor, in a public ‘home counties’ vote and now it’s open season as to what will take the place of the famous Mayfair (that should bring out the stilettos!), Old Kent Road (possibly not quite as hotly-contested…), Electric Company (The Electric Theatre, surely, if sensible decisions are made?) and such…

“We’re delighted that Guildford has been chosen to have its very own Monopoly board,” says Cllr Paul Spooner, leader of Guildford Borough Council. “I can’t wait to see which of our iconic landmarks and buildings appear on this classic game.”

While it’s likely that the town’s best-known landmarks, such as the cathedral, castle and clock, will take centre stage, there’s sure to be some curveballs along the way.

There’s also been some rather naughty suggestions that ‘Jail’ should be replaced with Woking and that, while Green Belt battles continue to rage in the area, this is at least one harmless way to keep property developers occupied...

To have your say on exactly what features, e-mail guildford@winningmoves.co.uk or visit the Guildford Monopoly Facebook page before midnight on Tuesday May 31.

If all goes to plan, the new board game will be released in time for Christmas – well, that’s one gift sorted already!
