Did you know?

Teenage mutant
At Bay Pond Nature Reserve, which is managed by Surrey Wildlife Trust, there are some rather surprising occupants: red-eared terrapins. Some think they may be a result of the 1980s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles craze. A more welcome sight in recent months has been the return of the kingfisher.

Not so natural...
The Bay Pond is actually man-made. It was created in the 16th century by the owner of Godstone Manor and Leigh Mill, George Evelyn, as part of his gunpowder works.

Streete cred
Former Crystal Palace FC chairman Ron Noades, owner of Godstone Golf Club, has promised a new 73-suite hotel to accompany the course. It has not yet been confirmed when work will begin on converting the 18th century former boys school building, Streete Court, however.

On the stage
The Orpheus Centre is an inclusive performing arts centre founded by British entertainer and musician Richard Stilgoe and found just outside the village. Stilgoe was recently knighted by the Queen.

While youre there...

Visit...
Godstone Farm, which is one of the oldest and busiest childrens farms in the country, seeing up to 2,000 visitors a day during the summer.

Eat at...
Just opposite, the Godstone Hotel (01883 742461) is a hidden gem with its stylish Courtyard Restaurant opening up onto the road fortunately not as busy as the A25, which runs through the village.

Drink at...
For a relaxing drink or a spot of contemporary dining, try The Bell (01883 743216) on the High Street.

Stay at...
The aforementioned Godstone Hotel, of course. Seems rude not too...

Move there for...
700,000
And get: A charming five-bedroom period house in a rural setting.

Famous neighbours?
The newly knighted, Sir Richard Stilgoe.

Getting there...
Located on the busy A25, the easiest way to reach Godstone is by road, with its nearest station in neighbouring villages.
