Close to Epsom but with its own identity, the Romans knew the area well and are said to have deviated their famous Stane Street to avoid the spring in Ewell. The nearby Nonsuch Palace was built by Henry Vlll and was intended to be his most impressive palace yet he died before it was finished and it has gained almost mythical status

Historic notes...
The notebook in which Sergeant Frank Bunn wrote his eyewitness account of the death of the suffragette Emily Davison at the 1913 Epsom Derby can be found at Bourne Hall Museum on Spring Street.


Hunt for history...
Epsom and Ewell History and Archaeology Society (formerly Nonsuch Antiquarian Society) is the local history, archaeology and conservation society for the area. It was founded in 1960 by people who had recently taken part in a major excavation of Henry VIII's Nonsuch Palace.


Art attack...
The Pre-Raphaelite painters, John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt, had connections with Ewell and used local scenes as backgrounds for a number of their paintings: notably Ophelia by Millais and The Light of the World by Hunt.

Nonsuch Palace, which required the relocation of a whole village to build it, and was meant to outshine the efforts of the tyrants greatest rival, King Franois of France.
