The Jets and the Sharks are coming to Dorking this March, as the award-winning Dorking Dramatic & Operatic Society bring their high-energy, high-drama production of West Side Story to town.

This thrilling modern take on Romeo and Juliet, is filled with emotive songs and high-energy dances that will transport you to 1950s New York City and into the lives of the teenagers that were caught up in romance, betrayal and gang feuds.

With music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

The members of the Sharks are first-generation Americans from Puerto Rico taunted by the Jets, a working-class white group who consider themselves the true Americans.

The dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance sequences and focus on social problems marked a turning point in American musical theatre - and will have you on the edge of your seat at Dorking Halls.

  • Dorking Dramatic & Operatic Society presents West Side Story at Dorking Halls, Reigate Road, Dorking, RH4 1SG, from Tuesday March 1 to Saturday March 5, 7.45pm (plus a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm). Tickets are 10 to 16 and can be bought by calling the box office on 01306 881717
