Talking in codes
Opened by the Queen Mother in 1962, the Fairfield Halls has played host to everyone from The Beatles to Elton John. It continues to feature in major film releases too, with the most recent being Dagenham Girls, starring Bob Hoskins. The opening scene of The Da Vinci Code, starring Tom Hanks, was also filmed there.
History of cinema...
The town has a famous cinematic history, being the birthplace of Sir David Lean, director of Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, and, until it was closed by cuts, the independent cinema was named after him. Bringing things right up to date, scenes from the latest Batman instalment, The Dark Knight Rises, were filmed in the town.
Great and good
In the Tudor era, John Whitgift, a former Archbishop of Canterbury who is buried in Croydon Parish Church with five others who held the title, had a huge impact on the town.
Journey of discovery
Croydon Tours run every Saturday covering everything from the towns history to a Peep Show (the Channel 4 sitcom) location tour and a ghost walk.
