Did you know?

Say my name
While many unsuspecting travellers are quick to pronounce it Coolsdon, residents are even swifter to point out that the towns moniker should actually be said Colesdon.

Linking up
The Croydon, Merstham, and Godstone railway, or Surrey Iron Railway, was built through Coulsdon. It had horse-drawn wagons, and was the first public railway in the world.

In harmony
Mention barbershop and the first image that comes to mind is often four chaps in straw boaters and candy-striped blazers (or somewhere you get your hair cut). Surrey Harmony is a womens barbershop chorus, however, and practise every Wednesday at Coulsdon Methodist Church Hall.

Signing trouble...
In a sign of the times, health and safety costs have put celebratory new signage in the neighbouring village of Old Coulsdon on hold. The elegant steel signs, created to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the local residents association, would require scaffolding, pulleys and fencing to meet legal requirements when erecting.

While youre there...

the London Outer Orbital Path, which was opened in 1996 as a kind of M25 for walkers. Now better known as the London Loop, the 150-mile long footpath runs round the edge of Greater London, passing through Coulsdon on route.

Eat at...
La Scarpetta on Brighton Road is an Italian restaurant (0208 668 7417).

Drink at...
The Ramblers Rest (01737 552661) and The Fox in Coulsdon Common (01883 340737) provide respite for many a walker.

Stay at...
Coulsdon Manor and Golf Club (0208 668 0414), which was originally built in 1850 for the Byron family.

Move there for...
And get: A five-bedroom home with breathtaking views to Banstead Woods.

Famous neighbours?
Answers on a postcard.

Getting there...
On the A23 of junction 7 of the M25. Coulsdon South station is on the main Brighton line.
