If you've ever taken a wrong turn off the A3, you may have come across a fairytale tower and wondered what on earth it was, before promptly falling in love with the place. The sad news (not for those who live there) is that Ruxley Towers is a selection of private homes. Theres more to Claygate than just this Victorian edifice, however

Five a day...
Discovered by John Braddick growing in a hedge near his home in the village, the Claygate Pearmain apple was particularly popular as a garden variety in Victorian and Edwardian England.

The fairytale tower...
Originally built in the late 1800s by Lord Foley, for his wife Lady Evelyne (some say to compete with the height of Queen Victorias country house at nearby Claremont), the striking Ruxley Towers features octagonal rooms, vaulted ceilings and culminates in a roof terrace capable of hosting the perfect cocktail party.

In bloom...
Claygate will be re-entering the national In Bloom competition with new vigour in 2012 after a short break. Claygate first entered in 2007 and since then has been awarded both high silver and silver gilt. Local competitions have continued throughout.

The sound of leather on oak...
Over 125 years old, Claygate Cricket Club has played on the recreation ground since 1935. It is distinctive in that it has two large mature oak trees within the outfield, for which
there are particular local rules!

While youre there...

Most noted for...
Attracting more than 5,000 people each year and over 100 years old, Claygate Flower Show has been running for longer than the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.

Visit
...the open green spaces of Telegraph Hill for a view over the village to Ruxley Towers.

Eat at...
The Greek Vine (01372 465125) at The Green is over 25 years old. Expect intentionally broken china, plus live entertainment on Thursday nights.

Drink at...
The Hare & Hounds (01372 465149) on The Green.

The Faces Ronnie Wood reportedly lives at Ruxley Towers.

Getting there...
Just off the A3. Claygate station is right in the middle of the village.
