Various dates between Wednesday November 25 and Saturday January 2, timed entrance between 5pm and 8.15pm

Experience the breathtaking winter landscape at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew with their new, glittering, mile-long, night-time trail. Now in its third year, the winter light experience for 2015 focuses on the Christmas tree and Kew’s special part in its history. It was Queen Charlotte, a founder of Kew Gardens, who first dressed the branches of a tree for all to enjoy at Kew Palace in the 1790s. From bewitching tree canopies drenched in Christmas hues to glowing waterside reflections as clusters of illuminated fountains dance in an explosion of colour, it promises to be the perfect place for a little Christmas magic. Tickets: adults, £16; children (four to 16), £10.

Winter Illuminations at Watts woodlands

Friday November 27 to Sunday February 28, dusk to 6pm

Explore the wintery woodlands at Watts Gallery in Compton to discover illuminations created specifically for the Artists’ Village by contemporary artists Terry Perk and Julian Rowe. Inspired by the medieval imagery of the terracotta tiles in Watts Chapel, the mosaics of kaleidoscope lights will remain for the opening of the Watts Studios in early 2016. Free with admission to the gallery (adults, £7.50; children 16 and under, free).

Christmas Glow at RHS Garden Wisley

Thursday December 3 to Sunday January 3, until 5pm

Enjoy the atmosphere of the festive season with the Christmas light installations around the garden at RHS Wisley, which is set to bloom with huge illuminated flowers created by Jigantics. Also, don’t miss out on all the natural Christmas decorations around the garden! Visit at dusk, as the garden opens until 5pm (last entry 4pm). Entry is free once you’ve entered the garden (Tickets: adults, £12; children (five to 16), £6). Christmas Glow will be preceded by Wisley’s annual late Christmas shopping evening and lights switch-on on Wednesday December 2, from 5pm, which will be presided over by Great British Bake Off star Mary Berry.

...and the festive-sounding Surrey trail that’s open all year!

While it may sound like a tour of our county’s bakeries, The Christmas Pie Trail is actually a leisurely cycle route that runs from the north-west of Guildford to the east of Farnham. The route is 8.5miles long, suitable for cyclists of all abilities and is virtually traffic free. It also passes close by the Hogs Back Brewery in Tongham, for those looking to enter the spirit of the occasion. Finally, yes, there is actually a hamlet called Christmas Pie in Surrey!
