Best comedy venues in Surrey

Stand up, dust off your funny bones and head to a venue near you for some of the most hilarious nights around. Our lady in the front row, Rebecca Jones, points us in the right direction...

Though best-known as a music venue, Guildford’s The Boileroom also hosts the Kick Back Comedy Club. If you are looking to go to a show that is full of raw comedy, then these nights will tickle your fancy. With an assortment of great comedians from around the UK, the event is held on the first Saturday of every month, usually to a full house. All of their shows feature resident MC, Debra-Jane Appelby, as well as three more great comedians.

Over the last few years, Dorking Halls has really made a name for itself with its comedy offering. Russell Brand, Jimmy Carr, Russell Howard and Lee Mack are just a few of the stars who have warmed up for arena tours there. It’s not just about the comedy here either as they also offer pre-show curries for those looking to make the most of their monthly Screaming Blue Murder Comedy Club. Fans of a certain vintage are also eagerly expecting Jasper Carrott’s latest appearance at the venue, coming up this month.

Standing in the centre of the Croydon arts scene for more than 50 years, since the Queen Mother opened it back in 1962, this excellent venue draws crowds from far and wide to watch the UK’s most celebrated comedians. In the coming months, comedy fans can expect to see Dawn French and Al Murray among those performing in the Concert Hall.

A bustling riverside arts hub, Farnham Maltings is another special venue to watch comedy acts both big and small. Comedy icons such as Lee Evans and Alan Carr have made their way to perform in the Great Hall over the years, while they also host a monthly comedy club in the intimate Cellar Bar on the second Wednesday of each month. There’s clearly something about comedy and curry, as this is another venue where you can enjoy a spicy treat while you watch the comedic talent.

Situated in the heart of Guildford, G Live is a venue that hosts the full comedy spectrum under one roof. Whether you’re looking to see up-and-comers at their Hellfire Comedy Club or international stars, expect plenty of laughter, excitement and an electric atmosphere. Nina Conti, Bill Bailey and Paddy McGuinness are just a few of the many in-demand comedians that you can look forward to seeing in the coming months.

The Harlequin Theatre
Having started in a local pub, Comedy Cottage proved such a hit that the night’s comedians are now stepping up to the mic at The Harlequin Theatre, on the last Friday of every month, instead. Taking place in one of the function rooms, rather than on the main stage, the event retains a comfortable intimacy that attracts top television stars and international comedians, as well as rising comedic stars of the future.

New Victoria Theatre
Opening its doors in the summer of 1992, this grand theatre has become almost as renowned for its comedy acts as its sell-out theatrical productions. With a classical layout, excellent acoustics and state-of-the-art technical facilities, the New Victoria Theatre is not to be missed for comedy-goers. In the upcoming months, they’ll be welcoming heavy-hitters such as Dara Ó Briain, Jimmy Carr and Ruby Wax.

Riverhouse Arts Centre
What once stood as an 18th century barn is now a thriving hub for artistic and comedic aptitude. Situated just a stone’s throw from the River Thames, the Riverhouse Arts Centre is certainly an idyllic location to enjoy a few laughs. Plus, this popular venue hosts comedy acts all year round, as well as their regular Mock Tudor Comedy Nights.

The Star Inn
Based in ‘The Back Room’, belonging to one of the oldest pubs in Guildford, the intimate Guildford Gag House nights form part of the Guildford Fringe and offer guests the chance to relax and enjoy a casual evening full of giggles. Taking place on the third Saturday of every month, starting at 8pm, it’s the perfect place to grab your favourite tipple and watch top comedians from the UK comedy circuit.

The Stoke Pub
An atmospheric place for hearty laughs, quality food and brilliant entertainment, The Stoke has a vibrant schedule of events including their comedy nights, You Must Be Stoking, on the first Wednesday of every month at 8pm. Shappi Khorsandi, Hal Cruttenden and Seann Walsh have all proven hits at this venue, with some of Surrey’s newest breakout comedians also stepping up to the stage. The pub also doubles as a pizzeria, just in case you fancy a change from curry…
