CURRENTLY showcasing her oil painting Panic at the Royal Academy's prestigious Summer Exhibition, Japanese artist Michi Araya has been enjoying great success of late.

Initially, her interest in the arts began with haiku (Japanese poetry) and her poems are published widely in her home country. It was haiku that led Michi, 67, on to painting, following the same philosophy of leaving her work 'open to the imagination'.

Having travelled widely in her twenties, she moved to Surrey some 30 years ago after meeting her husband, an art book publisher, at a dinner party in Reigate. The couple have lived in the county since they married, first in Kingston and then Hinchley Wood, where they live today.

In fact, the long views of Richmond Park and Telegraph Hill, the river, and the numerous beautiful gardens have all helped inspire her paintings.

As well as exhibiting at the Royal Academy, her work has also been shown at London's Bankside Gallery and at a personal exhibition at Langan's Brasserie.

  • The Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition runs until August 16.
