Michaela Strachan has been a household name since the early eighties and travelled the globe filming her wildlife TV shows. So it was rather nice that she returned to her Surrey roots for an afternoon of animal fun based around her poetry at leading Guildford entertainment venue, G Live. The popular wildlife presenter was born in Ewell and educated at Esher’s Claremont Fan Court School.

Michaela’s poems were inspired by her many and varied adventures experienced during the filming of her TV shows, notably The Really Wild Show. She has meet countless animals and has become involved with ecological projects all over the world. Her live show is based heavily on her poems, yet it manages to avoid coming across as too clumsy a plug. Although inevitably, the book was available on sale after the show, complete with the chance to get it signed by the lady herself.

Back to the show, which lasted an ideal 60 minutes and started off with the challenge of finding an animal for every letter of the alphabet. Audience participation was encouraged, both to shout out suggestions and for some lucky children - and adults - to join Michaela on stage to help re-enact some of the verses and join in the dances.

The poems were fun and carried important ecological messages too. Michaela found inventive ways to present them, from getting delighted children to squirt water pistols into the audience to imitate a spitting cobra to hanging upside down from her ankles as she told the tale of a friendly fruit bat.

Right at the end, Michaela read a touching poem about her relationship with an adopted orang-utan, which calmed the pace down perfectly and left her listeners with warm feelings of human kindness and hope. As she retired into her African adventurer’s tent and the lights dimmed, we couldn’t help but feel inspired by her evident love of animals and the energetic hard work that has earned her such lasting public appeal.

Michaela Strachan’s show at G Live is part of a nation-wide tour. Go online to www.michaelastrachan.co.uk to find out more.
