It's the start of a very busy few months for Hersham sculptor Malcolm West. Not only will he be visiting Guildford Cathedral with Surrey Sculpture Society and then with them again at RHS Wisley in August, but that's hot off the heels of another Surrey Artists Open Studios.

I certainly keep busy! laughs the 52-year-old. My proudest achievement, however, was catching my little girls yawn in a terracotta portrait. It took about six months to achieve it. Waiting for the yawn to happen each night, then uncovering the sculpture to add to what I had seen. All done from life start to finish.

Also a painter, the Worcester born artist creates figurative works in oils, pastel, terracotta, bronze, bronze resin and stone, and says he finds so much inspiration living in Surrey.
Its so beautiful here, he says. I can find inspiration anywhere. From Ranmore Common to the Wey canal at Ripley; from the bridge caf in East Molesey to Tango at the Stoke in Guildford.
