Hap Tempo Interview for EquiCirque

Q. What does "Adrenaline" mean to you?
Participating in a show like Adrenaline is very exciting for us. It is a first for us, performing in a magical city like London and with a full line-up of top European equestrian artists. It is also special to be involved in a production that will be one of the biggest shows in Europe, offering our audience an exceptional show.

2. When did you discover your passion for riding?
(Emilie) I learned aerobatics at school Annie Fratellini circus of Paris at the age of 15 years, and had the most illustrious Domeneco Caroli as a teacher. Therefore, stung by the virus of the circus, I've never cared for anything else!

(Charles) I was born into a family of performers, and therefore I have always lived in that environment ... the passion has been inside me since birth.

3. Who inspired you most throughout your career?
(Charles) First it was my parents and my family and then I had the chance to work and learn from a lot of great people such as George Branch and Mario Luraschi. Working with Gennady Touaev ( Moscow Circus) gave me training in classical aerobatics and traditional Russian Cossack and Djigitovka. Gilles Ste Croix (co-founder of Cirque du Soleil) also made me discover a new way of doing the show. I spent three years with him and Cirque du Soleil in his show Saka in North America.

(Emilie) Annie Fratellini, a great lady with a big heart. It is she who believed in a small Parisian, who was not from the world of the circus, and that allowed me to meet my teacher Domeneco Caroli. Domeneco is like a father to me and from him I have learnt everything from him. I owe Annie a lot.

4. What can you tell us about your horses?
(Emilie) I ride a seven year old, 800kg Boulonnais horse called Rustik. He is really beautiful, all white with a long mane, enduring and energetic. He is deeply kind, making him an extremely reliable horse. All of these assets together make the perfect horse for vaulting.

(Charles) I work with Fuego, a ten year old Lusitan. I've never had a horse like him before. Besides being beautiful, there is no horse more versatile for Djigit (Cossack acrobatics). I can perform absolutely all the movements of Djigit display, from upright through a series of acrobatic moves, before finally passing under his belly. It's very rare to have a horse as versatile; it combines strength, endurance, speed and balance. Hes never betrayed me, and often saves the day!

5. How long do you work with your horses before they become a part of your act?
It depends on the horses ... Generally, it takes three years to rehearse for the show, and then after another year of performing to have a really reliable horse.

6. How many times a week do you train?
Every day, several times a day but in different disciplines.

7. How do you learn new stunts for your act?
There is a Circassian saying that says:We repeat it to learn,We repeat it to know it well,And when we know it ... we repeat it again!

8. Have you ever had a serious accident? How did you recover afterwards? When you learn to work correctly you know to be patient, which greatly reduces the risk of injury. That said, even the best professionals are not immune to accidents. Especially when you try to push forward a performance. Luckily, we have never known a serious accident, apart from minor injuries such sprains etc. What's more is that we always recover faster than the doctors anticipate!

9. What do you enjoy doing when you're not riding?
Being a family with our 2 year old son Lino.

10. What is the largest number of spectators you have performed in front?
(Charles) I dont know. But I think it was with Mario Luraschi in POPB Paris Bercy.
(Emilie) The number of spectators doesnt matter, we like to perform, whether in front of 500 people or 10,000, we are pleased all the same. It is rather the quality of the show that interests us.

11. How many shows do you do each year?
The years pass and everyone is different! This year we participated in a dozen different shows, for about 50 performances ( besides the performances of the summer at Haras de la Vende, where we perform one show per day for 3 months).

12. If there is a place where you want to do a show, where would it be?
(Emilie) It will be a home from home, when we have our own tent.
(Charles) The Cirque dHivers in Paris, a prestigious and legendary venue and La Piste aux Etoileshas the greatest artists and circus acts in the world. For me it is the bible of circuses! Everything is already there.

13. When was the last time you performed in London?
London is a big first for us!

14. What can we expect to see you at Adrenaline in London?
You will discover the act that is most representative of Hap O Tempo - A new look at aerobatics with a performance which combines traditional circus acrobatics to Djigitovka (traditional Russian Cossack vaulting).

This will be a fresh and original show bringing together these two arts for the first time on the same stage in the same routine.

Caught in a game of seduction between two antagonistic characters on their horses, the audience will be transported through a wave of emotions through beauty, sensuality and excitement.
