“I am particularly pleased to be flying the flag for stained glass,” says Rachel. “I have been working with the medium for 25 years now and still find it fascinating.
“A beautiful window can transform a space and subtly changes as the light alters. I aim to create something timeless and beautiful, and if it has the wow factor and looks like it belongs in the space, then I have done my job.”
Most of Rachel’s work is commissioned and so, as the winner, she is delighted at the opportunity of a solo exhibition.
“I want to make a series of panels based on The Seven Ages of Man by Shakespeare, and another set inspired by my garden in Farncombe,” she says. “I am now very excited about producing some new work for my exhibition.
“I have been lucky enough to carry out many commissions across Surrey and it is a privilege to be invited into someone’s home and create a unique piece of art for them. Whether it is a Victorian terrace or an Arts and Crafts house designed by Lutyens, it is always a challenge and that is what makes it interesting.”
• Rachel’s solo exhibition will be at the New Ashgate Gallery, Farnham, from Saturday August 29 to Wednesday October 21. For more of her work, visit her website at rachelmulligan.co.uk
