Little can be more demoralising than dieting and exercising in a bid to lose weight with minimal success.

Making sure you are doing the right kind of exercise for your body type and finding the right nutrition can help you achieve your weight loss goals. Medical weight loss and hormonal health experts, Dr Kim Prescott, Dr Tania Schroeder and Dr Ruslana Popelyuk assess your health and use medical treatments to create targeted, bespoke programmes.

Through a combination of techniques, they aim to help patients lose weight, become healthier and maintain long-term lifestyle changes.

Here they discuss their approach:

Q: Why is it so difficult to lose weight?

Thyroid problems, hormone imbalances, insulin resistance and chronic stress can make it harder to lose weight. Picture: Getty ImagesThyroid problems, hormone imbalances, insulin resistance and chronic stress can make it harder to lose weight. Picture: Getty Images

There are a multitude of reasons. For many, it will be down to hormonal imbalances, perhaps due to thyroid function. As women get older, certain hormone levels change, having a huge impact on their weight – they tend to put on an average of around 10lbs when they go through the menopause and lose muscle mass and definition. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is often contributory in younger women. For men, as their testosterone drops, they may struggle to lose weight that they shed very easily in their youth. There might be insulin resistance, leading to fat being stored too easily and excessive hunger. Medication, depression and chronic stress can also often lead to weight gain. Sometimes there is no obvious reason why a patient is struggling to lose weight, nevertheless, we are still able to provide help, support and treatment.

Q: What is the best treatment for weight loss?

We need to know what the problem is to address it. We take a thorough history and may conduct tests to ascertain underlying causes and create individualised treatment programs. It is about finding the right medical solution, while also managing stress and improving self-confidence. Balancing hormones can play a big role; we may need to adjust the hormones or treat specific issues, such as a thyroid problem. Someone might need to stop or change a certain medication. It might be about exercise physiology, making sure a patient is doing the right kind of exercise for their body. It’s about finding the right nutrition too. We have a team of referral specialists we work with when necessary.

Q: What does medical weight loss do?

Our medical weight loss approach can help find the cause – leading to greater success. We might use prescribed medication where appropriate – there are licensed medical weight loss drugs that can work incredibly well. Sometimes people want to lose significant amounts of weight, at other times it is that last bit that they are really struggling with or perhaps they need help with muscle definition. We have body contouring machines, such as the EMSculpt that can improve muscle tone, which in turn can help boost the metabolism. Our Lipofirm TriLipo Triple Action Fat reduction technique combines radiofrequency and muscle toning technologies to achieve fat and cellulite reduction, muscle toning and skin tightening.

Q: How do I stay healthy?

Some people can achieve rapid weight loss, but we are also focused on long-term weight loss and improving lifestyles permanently. Whether someone loses weight quickly or slowly, they have to manage their lifestyle otherwise they will regain the weight in a short space of time.

As our programmes are bespoke, cost and duration vary from individual to individual. Clients can book a consultation through our website or contact us directly. They will see a highly trained doctor, specialising in weight loss, to help them discover the underlying issues, lose weight and maintain that loss in the long term.
