The award-winning Dorking Dramatic & Operatic Society (DDOS) is bringing Oscar Wilde’s most famous play The Importance of Being Earnest to life at the Green Room Theatre, Dorking from Tuesday January 28 to Saturday February 1.

This hilarious and popular satirical comedy was Wilde’s last play and is often referred to as one of the greatest comedies from one of the best theatre writers of all time.

Full of witty dialogue and unbelievably complicated social farce, The Importance of Being Earnest sees Jack Worthing and friend Algernon Moncrieff both leading double lives to avoid the social obligations that dictate the lives of the English upper classes in late Victorian London, where marriage was about protecting your resources and keeping socially unacceptable impulses under control.

“This comedy is a true classic of English theatre,” says director Shaun Hughes. “Although the play has been produced many times over the years, it still stands out as a wonderful piece of theatre. The script has made me laugh out loud on many occasions: the rapier wit, immortal dialogue and plot twists which challenge the society morals of the late Victorian period, are all truly enjoyable.

The show is a real joy to rehearse, for both the great cast and myself as Director. We are all having a great time and no rehearsal passes without everyone collapsing in laughter! This is Oscar Wilde’s memorial to his greatness, do come along and see how marvellous this show really can be.”

Described by Wilde as ‘a trivial comedy for serious people’, The Importance of Being Earnest is sure to be enhanced by the intimate settling of Dorking’s 86-seat Green Room Theatre, tucked away behind the Dorking Halls, and offering a unique Surrey theatre experience.

• The Importance of Being Earnest is on from Tuesday January 28 to Saturday February 1 at 7.45pm each night at the Green Room Theatre, Dorking (behind Dorking Halls). To book tickets, call the Dorking Halls Box Office on 01306 881717.
