Cycling hero Mark Cavendish sprinted to victory in Guildford to win the Surrey stage of the Tour of Britain for the second successive year this weekend.
The Omega Pharma Quick-Step rider enjoyed a perfect leadout from teammate Alessandro Petacchi to surge clear of his rivals at the foot of Guildford’s cobbled, uphill High Street.
The race had started off from Epsom Downs racecourse at midday, travelling through Ashtead, East Horsley, Dorking, Cranleigh, Shere, Woking and Farnham.
The following day saw the tenth edition of Britain’s biggest professional cycle race conclude in London, with a double success for British riders. Mark Cavendish took the final stage and Sir Bradley Wiggins won the overall title and the IG Gold Jersey.
