There’s a plethora of spooky goings on at AirHop House in Guildford this half term

“Never take sweets from a stranger,” is the traditional advice drummed into children – and yet there is one time of year when doing just that suddenly becomes the norm: Halloween trick-or-treating.

The tradition of children dressing up as ghosts, witches, vampires and zombies, and going out after dark to knock on doors and ask for goodies, goes back to the Middle Ages, although some Halloween beliefs and practices date much further back. However, in this day and age, many parents feel uneasy about letting their children go trick-or-treating. They may worry about their kids’ safety, or that their pranks might annoy or distress some people.

Luckily there are plenty of Halloween activities for kids that are safe and supervised, giving them the chance to enjoy wearing their fancy dress and do things that are also more fun than trailing around the streets on a cold October night.

For example, a lot of adventure parks and other family attractions lay on special Halloween horror nights during the October half-term break, complete with make-you-jump entertainment and staff dressed in Halloween costumes.

It is not just the obvious fun parks either; some zoos and nature attractions give children the chance to get up close to real-life spiders, snakes and creepy-crawlies, as well as running Halloween craft activities.

Activity and leisure centres are also coming on board; for instance, children in the Guildford area can even celebrate Halloween at a trampoline park. AirHop Guildford’s ‘Scare-Hop’ programme from October 14 -31 sees the park decorated for Halloween, with kids encouraged to come along in their Halloween costumes, so long as their fancy dress does not restrict their vision or movement when they are bouncing. There is a daily competition for the best-dressed customer, who will win a ‘golden ticket’ and a mystery prize. Special limited-edition trampoline socks are on sale, decorated with skeleton toes which glow under ultra-violet light. There will also be supervised trick-or-treating, a scavenger hunt and other spooky games.

Parents can also book a children’s Halloween trampoline party at AirHop, with the party rooms decorated for Halloween and special themed games.

Another option for Halloween entertainment during the half-term break is National Trust properties. Many historic buildings lend themselves perfectly to ghostly activities, with their imposing, atmospheric buildings and blood-curdling histories: in fact, some are reputed to be genuinely haunted. Throughout half term, you can find spine-chilling story-telling, spooky walks, bat hunts and Halloween craft activities at National Trust properties around Surrey.

With such a variety of events going on during the October half term, you can probably find something different to do every day, for children of all ages. They’ll enjoy dressing up in costumes and doing something new and fun such as trampolining or exploring a fascinating building. They will have plenty of treats without the tricks, and will they be bored? Not a ghost of a chance….
