A large, late Georgian and Victorian house, Glebe House is set in a peaceful residential location. The house is surrounded by secluded grounds featuring lawns, mature trees and shrubs and sensory garden. Glebe House also has a large conservatory. It is recognised for its quiet and peaceful surroundings, despite being within five minutes drive of the M25 and M23 motorways as well as being close to Croydon, Redhill, Oxted and the surrounding districts.

What kind of activities do you have on offer?

We have a beautiful secluded landscaped garden with a paved patio area, flower beds and seating. It is ideal for a stroll or just sitting and relaxing, enjoying the warmer weather. Many residents enjoy joining in with the gardening. We believe that individual stimulation is fundamental to delivering quality care and we have a full diary of activities.

How about the little luxuries…?

At Glebe House all the rooms have flat screen televisions and access to free Wi-Fi. We are about to undertake a huge refurbishment, where we will have a state of the art cinema room and hair salon.

What about the kind of things you have on your menu?

All our food is locally sourced and home cooked, and we pride ourselves on a nutritious and varied menu. All dietary requirements are catered for and residents can dine in the dining room, or in their bedrooms.

Finally, if you were going to sum up your care home to us in a Tweet, what would you say?

Glebe House is a building with character and caters for the elderly and the younger physically disabled. We also provide short-term convalescent, respite and day care.

Huntington House & Langham Court

Huntington House Drive, Hindhead GU26 6BG

Tel: 01428 604600

Web: huntingtonhouse.co.uk

Type of service: Care home providing both nursing and dementia care

Person interviewed: Charlie Hoare

Role: Director

Tell us about the kind of building in which you are based?

Huntington House is a 19th century country house that has been sympathetically renovated to accommodate all of the requirements of a modern nursing home. Set amongst 30 acres of gardens and grounds, we were able to incorporate a purpose-built dementia care home, Langham Court, within the same site. Although modern in appearance, Langham Court has been unobtrusively constructed into the hillside, creating two ground floors, and many of the features, including the large windows and wide corridors, were actually inspired by the traditional Victorian design of Huntington House.

What kind of activities do you have on offer?

Since introducing our flock of rare breed Ryeland sheep at Huntington House, the residents have formed a knitting circle that uses our home-grown wool to knit anything from blankets to beanies, which are then donated to charity. Some of our staff are keen to learn the art from our residents with the recent resurgence in knitting. In Langham Court, our entire dementia care model is based around activities. Residents are encouraged to carry out their regular daily activities to help them feel at home, from helping to lay the table for a family lunch to baking cakes for afternoon tea.

How about the little luxuries…?

Huntington House has a rather nice New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc house wine, as chosen by our residents at a well-attended wine tasting, which is served at lunch by our hotel-like hospitality team. We have built bars in both care homes, which have proved very popular with residents, as well as their families and friends. We are also currently trying to source some ‘Langham’ beer from the local Langham Brewery!

What about the kind of things you have on your menu?

Meal times are so important in care homes, so we try to make them special. At Huntington House, our head of hospitality wears a bow tie, and food is served under traditional silver cloches. In Langham Court, the staff join the residents for family-style meals, often followed with a rendition on the piano by Mrs Thomas, one of our residents, as she did when she was younger. All of our food is home-cooked and freshly prepared using seasonal vegetables and free-range meat sourced from our local butcher, Kaighin & Daughter. But our kitchen’s specialty has to be their traditional afternoon tea with cucumber sandwiches and freshly baked cakes.

Finally, if you were going to sum up your care home to us in a Tweet, what would you say?
Fun, friendly, family atmosphere – we put the ‘home’ back into care home.

Silvermere is built on the site of the historical bus museum that has now been re-sited to Brooklands Museum. Overlooking Silvermere Golf Club and the lake, the site is steeped in local history and closely connected to the memory of Sir Barnes Wallis. Whilst the site is of historical interest, the home has been built to a state of the art specification.

What kind of activities do you have on offer?

Activities are wide ranging and cater for our residents’ hobbies and interests. If you call in during summer, you may well catch them learning Tai Chi in the garden, Zumba dancing in the lounge or handling some magnificent birds of prey. Our weekly drop-in iPad clinic is very popular allowing residents to set up Skype or face time sessions.

How about the little luxuries…?

There is free Wi-Fi throughout and iPads available, flat screen TVs with built-in DVD player and Freeview in all bedrooms. Our Atrium Café open around the clock is a light and airy space to entertain friends and family to elevenses or afternoon tea. And our beautiful landscaped gardens overlooking the golf course and lake offer a tranquil setting for pre-dinner drinks. Hairdressing, beauty therapy and barber services are available in our salon and therapy room.

What about the kind of things you have on your menu?

We believe that the dining experience is paramount to the quality of life for our residents and our delicious, freshly cooked, locally sourced food rivals the best of restaurants; our team of chefs headed by James are very proud of the standard and there is always a choice with special diets catered for.

Finally, if you were going to sum up your care home to us in a Tweet, what would you say?

Silvermere Care Home turns the conventional view of a care home on its head.
