Alwaysout and about with his paintbrush, Elstead artist Rick Holmes is a great fan of working plein-air and often depicts familiar Surrey scenes in his beautiful oil paintings.
My work is a loose, yet realistic style inspired by the landscape I dont want to compete with photographs, says the 65-year-old, whorecently exhibitedwith both the Guildford and Farnham art societies at their respective spring exhibitions.
I love outdoor painting, especially near the River Wey with its various locks. Painting on location beside the sound of running water is inspirational.
Having settled in the village of Elstead for the last 30 years, Rick originally discovered his talent for painting as a youngster on holiday in Cornwall.
An active member of both the Guildford and Farnham art societies, Rick is a respected and prize-winning exhibitor and demonstrator last year, he won first prize at Chelsea Art Society and was elected a member there.
Since 2007, he has also been an elected member of the nationally acclaimed Wapping Group of Artists, who enjoy plein-air painting and exhibit each year at the Mall Galleries in London.
I continue to hold art classes in Elstead, which are proving very popular and are very important to me, while all the time I am exploring and developing my own painting, he says. You never stop learning!
