If the thought of tearing around in the latest supercars appeals but the insurance costs and fear of spotting flashing blues in the wing mirrors doesnt, then the 6th Gear Experience at Longcross, Chertsey may be the answer to your dreams. Surrey Life's Ade Holder puts his foot down and tackles the many twists and turns

Motoring fanatics all know about the historic Brooklands, Weybridge and most have heard about the Top Gear studios and track at Dunsfold, but I would bet not as many people know of the tarmac leviathan that is Longcross, nestled in the woods just outside Chertsey.

Opened to the public in 2009, you can now tear around over two miles of wooded turns and open straights in some of the worlds fastest and most stunning cars thanks to the folks at the 6th Gear Experience.

You can choose to drive cars like the mighty Lamborghini Murcilago, the mad Ariel Atom, the always striking Porsche 993 turbo, the frankly cybernetic Nissan GTR and you can even try your hand at driving at giant articulated lorry!

While my better half Caroline chose to take out the Audi R8 and a rather beautiful baby blue Lamborgini Gallardo Spyder, I chose to try the savage Ferrari 458 and the more refined Aston Martin Vantage Coupe. Suffice to say, a lot of fun ensued. A lot of fun indeed

On the track
When your name is called, you are escorted across the tarmac to meet your instructor and take your seat in the vehicle of your choice. Instantly you are put at ease, these guys know what they are doing and your only job is to listen, relax and enjoy.

Supercars still start up like a normal car, albeit with rather more ceremony and noise. But they are still just a car, so you are encourage to pull away as you would normally. Its a fantastic feeling coasting across the paddock and getting your photo taken in the hot seat.

With his eye on all the mirrors I was told by my instructor to hit the throttle and head out on track. The next three two mile laps were a bit of a blur, sheer joy is certainly a feeling that springs to mind; utter childish joy the noise, the feeling of acceleration and cornering, and the calm confidence of an experienced coach all make this a real automotive dream. It was breathtaking to push the Ferrari 458 towards the red line and snap it up a gear and I wont forget that feeling for a long time. The 6th Gear team are carefully taking pictures of you around the track and also filming both your face and the road in front on handy little USB cameras anyway, so you get to take home great photos worth framing and full length videos to either wow or bore your family and friends with.

This is not just a gift or a self financed treat for big boys who want even bigger toys, this is for the ladies too. In fact, 6th Gear say they have almost a 50:50 ratio of men and women taking to the track.

This not only shows that the way this experience is put together is great for everyone, but it also shows girls like going fast just as much as us boys, and I for one celebrate that fact a great deal.
