Why there has been a rise in the popularity of glass and glazing products

PUBLISHED: 14:36 08 April 2015 | UPDATED: 14:36 08 April 2015

The last few years have seen a significant rise in popularity of glass and glazing products. We’ve been speaking to general manager of Express Bi-Folding Doors, Steve Bromberg, to gain some insight into the trend.

What do you think has sparked the rise in popularity of glazing products in the last decade?

Aspirational television programmes like Grand Designs really kick-started it, with other programmes since following suit. They’re widely features in glossy lifestyle magazines and are showcased at live exhibitions like Grand Designs Live & the Ideal Home Show, so there’s more exposure. We’ve also noticed a real rise in people are turning to these types of products as a way of maximising existing space, as opposed to moving house.

Companies like us are now able to offer aspirational products at realistic prices as they are manufactured in the UK, which has helped make formerly unrealistic homes a viable prospect. As a result, they’re more readily considered for residential projects.

Do you tend to see people planning bi-folding doors for old or new properties?

It’s a real mixture. We regularly replace traditional French doors and sidelights with bi-folding doors, and we get a lot of people wanting to knock out the back of their house to replace with our products. Likewise, architects’ plans now contain bi-folding doors 90% of the time, which is in stark contrast to a decade or so ago.

For homeowners, what are the practical differences between PVC and aluminium?

Aluminium is much stronger and slimmer than PVC so it allows for considerably more glass, larger folding panels, and can also be manufactured to much larger heights and widths. From an aesthetics perspective, aluminium is available in over 200 RAL colours and a variety of finishes, so it can be tailored to suit the building and setting.

What’s your favourite project you’ve ever worked on?

Without a doubt The Dome House in Cumbria which was featured on Grand Designs – it’s an extremely impressive, unique property. It was such a long-drawn-out project because of their financial constraints, so it was especially satisfying to see the project finally come to a conclusion.

If people are considering bi-folding doors, windows or other glazing products, who should be their first point of contact?

I would always recommend visiting a showroom. It’s the best way to get a feel for what you prefer and understand the product options up-close.
