What you can expect…

Apart from the joy of driving through the Surrey countryside, the arrival at Chobham is a surprising delight in itself. The High Street may be small but there’s much to be seen, from the lovely village church to a crop of eateries and pleasant shops. Right in the middle is Whitedown Interiors, which only opened last summer, and the nearby car park offers free parking for two hours.

First impressions…

The shop is located on the site of the old bank chambers with double doors flanked by windows set within a lovely arch. On the day I visited, the interior was awash with soft shades of grey, pale coffee and cream – from the clever shelving to the sophisticated home accessories. Owner Melanie Manzi describes her shop as “filled with classically inspired design pieces that are always changing”. To me, there was something for every proud homeowner, from furniture to mirrors, tableware to doorstops, all at reasonable prices.

Unusual finds…

Among the furniture, which forms part of the display, I particularly liked the neat console table painted in soft grey – perfect for hallways – and the impressive 2.5m console in poplar wood that would be ideal in a large family kitchen. Unusual lighting also caught my eye. Hanging from the ceiling were globe chandeliers that reflected the light beautifully and beaten metal dome lights to hang low over a table. Smart table lamps can also be found here.

Other highlights…

The affordable tableware in white or cream from France looks much too smart for everyday use and goes perfectly with the wooden-handled, grey cutlery from Denmark. The Sophie Allport linen in duck egg blue, patterned with stags, is new this season and I loved the sequined doorstops and draught excluders filled with a mix
of lavender and wheat. Whitewashed cane baskets for essential storage also caught my attention, as did the weighty food boards, recycled from oak barrels, for cheese or pizzas.

While you’re there…

You won’t be able to resist one of the Dr Vranjes reed diffusers in the Florentine duomo inspired bottles with delicious fragrances such as ginger lime that last
for up to six months. And the lovely pillar candles in grey or lilac trimmed with velvet ribbons make great gifts. Throws in merino wool or softest fur are also not to be missed.

Why you should visit…

Because in this corner of Surrey, Whitedown Interiors is an inspirational shop that has many one-off pieces you’ll want to buy, as well as dinner party gifts and attractive home accessories you may not find anywhere else.
