Name of store: The White Company
Address: 13 Swan Lane, Guildford GU1 4EQ
Tel: 01483 459035

Background...

Some 15 years ago, Chrissie Rucker, above, identified a gap in the market for beautiful but affordable home accessories in white and so founded The White Company. It was a brave concept but one that she felt passionately about.

Initially, she supplied her customers by mail order through a 12-page brochure photographed in a friend's house. Ten years on, the company opened its first shop in Chelsea and now has 24 UK stores. The Guildford store is in the charming location of Swan Lane.

Style...

Understated simplicity is an inherent feature of the store, from the plain white walls, creamy ceramic floor and glass with chrome fittings.

On the ground floor, you'll find beautiful home accessories: candles, glass and china as well as a small selection of classic casual garments.

Upstairs, the store really comes into its own with two fabulous beds layered with crisp sheets topped with stunning cushions and throws. It's an oasis of calm from the beautifully soft colours to the soothing music. Here, too, are children's bed linen and clothes and one or two simply gorgeous toys.

Specialises in...

The heart of the product range is everything to dress the bed, including pure white cotton sheets plus luxury bath towels. There's also a core range of white bedroom furniture including beds, chests and lamps, but for the wow factor check the hotel-style quilted headboard and matching chaise longue.

True to Chrissie's original dream, The White Company's signature colour is pure, calming white, but she now combines this with the softest of other hues. Here, you'll find creamy mohair throws and gorgeous mocha-coloured silk bedspreads, as well as cushions in gentle pink, green and blue colours.

Best buys...

All the bed linen is irresistible and well-priced for the quality. But for sheer luxury, check out the goose down duvets and pillows, which are literally as light as a feather. Also not to be missed are the fragrant candles in the trademark black and white packaging.

Worth a visit...

Because you'll be hard-pushed to walk away without treating yourself!

Favourite product...

The cushions shimmering with sequins, beautifully pleated or embroidered will add glamour to any bed.
