Interview by Janet Donin

It was while Sandy Humby was designing couture wedding dresses that she first became interested in alternative therapies, which led to a life-changing decision.

Well, I couldnt see myself sitting behind a sewing machine forever, laughs the 56-year-old interior designer, who is based in Kingston.

But with her holistic outlook, she is no ordinary designer, and alongside good design, she searches for the best flow of energy in a space by following the principles of feng shui.

I look at the best woods and finishes for furniture, soft furnishings and lighting, as well as the perfect colours, to ensure that the maximum chi (energy) is created within the home, says Sandy. That way, the well-being of the client is optimised in every way.

Its a radical concept, but for anyone who has picked up good or bad vibes in a home, its also totally believable.

For bathrooms, Sandy chooses natural limestone or travertine for a feeling of calm; in a bedroom, she always places the bed against a substantial wall and never facing a window to create balance and harmony; and, for the living room, shell choose a palette of colours to enhance your well-being.

When we feel relaxed in a space, our energy fields can expand and recharge, she says. This enables us to be more effective in our work, more content in our rest and more available for fun in play.

Well, its hard to argue with that!

In my view...
