Interview by Janet Donin

As a young boy helping out in his fathers joinery, little did Richard Baker guess that one day he would design a kitchen for the most famous chef in the country. Working with Gordon Ramsay, however, has been just one career highlight of many.

Im passionate about creating affordable, bespoke kitchens that my clients can feel at home with and enjoy, says the 45-year-old, who is based in New Malden.

To this end, he has produced three signature styles to initially engage his clients: comfortable classic in timeless woods; slick contemporary with painted doors or panelling; and sharp modern featuring bright white units.

Having established a preferred style, he then customises the design to reflect the owners personality and to blend with the character of their home.

Designing furniture, however, remains Richards first love, and he still enjoys creating one-off pieces to provide continuity through the rooms.

Theres something very satisfying about seeing my ideas flow from a bespoke kitchen to a beautiful dining table and perhaps to a mirrored wardrobe, he adds. Ive got so many designs floating around in my head, but Im always striving to create something with the wow factor.

Inspiration can come from anywhere and he often photographs architectural details, woodgrains and even quirky rubbish bins to prompt new ideas.

In my view...

What do you love most about your home?
My glazed, cube garden room, which I designed myself. Its a haven of audio/visual toys and has two very comfortable sofas.

Tell us the best thing about your job?
I thrive on the designing aspect of my job where I use classical details in a modern way.

How do you like to relax when youre away from work?
I love fly-fishing in the fabulous lakes around Dorking.

Is there anything you couldnt do without?
My camera. I take photographs of anything that stimulates design ideas and incorporate certain details into my furniture.

Whats the next thing you will buy for your home?
A projector so I can catch up on all those horror films from the Eighties, which I now feel I am brave enough to watch!
