What you can expect…
The beauty of a double-fronted shop with a central doorway is that it always leads you in and says ‘welcome’, and that’s just what you’ll find at Paprika. Located at the top end of Walton High Street, it opened just over a year ago and is already a ‘go-to’ shop for much more than gifts.
There was a steady stream of delighted shoppers on the day I visited, all watched over by the very helpful and knowledgeable manager, Helen. She immediately pointed out the new selection of traditional tinware in cream, especially the recycling bin, which is more attractive than the plastic bins the council provides.
And, as I was looking for a birthday gift for a friend, she steered me towards the great selection of Surrey-made candles and diffusers by Heyland & Whittle, pointing out that the green tea and grapefruit fragrances are the most popular.
The wonderful selection of clocks that are more like works of art, especially the 72cm-diameter clock with the multi-coloured face. And you’re bound to find just the right message on one of the many pottery, wood or slate products from ‘Just Married’ to ‘Do what makes your heart smile!’
Glass and china can be found here too and I discovered some really pretty silver-spotted teacups and saucers – just right for that special cuppa for yourself or as a gift (in a matching box) for a friend.
And no one can resist a cushion or two. The natural linen cushions appliqued with brown velvet hearts or words of love are very stylish but for the ultimate in comfort try the pure wool cushions with fringed detail in stripes, checks or chevron designs with matching throws.
If there’s a baby on the way, there are stylish keepsake boxes, photo albums and certificate holders. And for wedding gifts, take a look at the silver-plated photo frames and array of special cutlery and champagne flutes.
Smart satchel bags in a range of great colours, plus silver jewellery, large scarves and a selection of fashion items can all be found among the many gifts. I couldn’t resist the socks made from bamboo fibre especially for the odourly challenged.
Gift wrapping comes as standard but there’s an array of pretty papers and ribbons on offer if you prefer to do it yourself.
Why you should visit…
Whether you want an unusual card, a cute toy or stylish Orla Kiely stationery, you’ll find it here among the must-have candles, colourful shopping bags (that double as storage containers) and even smart Ted Baker gifts for the man in your life. With parking just across the road and The Heart shopping centre around the corner, Paprika is handily located too.
