Background ...

For many years, John Graham was synonymous in Cranleigh with haberdashery and linens. But, in 2004, his son Richard and partner Elaine, above, took over the store and One Forty became a reality. With Richard's inherent retail knowledge and Elaine's background in fashion, this surprisingly large store is now a one-stop shopping experience for the community. Here, you'll find not only tableware and linen, candles and cards, but beautiful flowers and fashion and a lovely café as well.

Style ...

Elaine describes the ethos of the store as 'eclectic' and this is certainly evident as soon as you enter. Beautiful flowers, pots and garden accessories, sourced by Jackie Prior, immediately catch the eye. A few steps further on, you'll find an array of china and home fragrances, jars and photo frames all arranged on tables and chests. "We like to create interesting displays to inspire our customers," says Elaine. Bright fashion accessories and adorable baby clothes come next, sourced in New Zealand. Nudge through to the menswear section and at the back is the fashion area where colour-coordinated clothes tempt the most discerning of shoppers.

Specialises in ...

For the home, there's Emma Bridgewater pottery, with its patterned hearts, polka dots and 'black toast' lettering. Scented candles are always irresistible and their range by Geodesis are all made from natural ingredients. Scattered around the shop are interesting pieces of furniture - a distressed table, an antique desk, chests and shelves that are all sourced at auction houses to give One Forty a unique take on interiors. There are also beautiful voile panels and table linens in muted shades that simply fly out of the store.

Best buys ...

Apart from the unique fashions for both men and women, you'll love the one-off furniture pieces, wooden trays and glass storage jars. And because One Forty has a wish list, you can let your friends and family know what you would like them to buy you for your birthday or special occasion. The hand tied bouquets and tiny arrangements in little glass vases are perfect for gifts.

Go because ...

The café on the first floor is light and bright, surrounded by fun pieces of affordable artwork, and because they serve the best coffee and light lunches, with newspapers, in the neighbourhood.
