When Hilary Collingwood and her university friend Kate Guy opened an interiors shop, their love of France and soft furnishings, together with their joint backgrounds in marketing and retail, proved a winning combination.
Specialising in French and Swedish style painted furniture, the first Maison Interiors opened in Tunbridge Wells in 2001. It was so successful that they soon moved to larger premises and then three years ago expanded to Richmond as well.
As soon as you enter the double-fronted store, you are surrounded by country house chic thats a reflection of Hilary and Kates own style.
For example, a pretty scallop-edged console table, topped with elegant lamps and crackle silver candlesticks, nudges a typically French love sofa upholstered in neutral linen and piled with patterned cushions.
Here, too, is a selection of dining furniture bought in both the UK and Europe, which is possibly the core product. Current favourites are tables with polished oak tops and bases painted in the signature colours of sludgy green, slate and stone. All are set with tableware, linen and candles to help and inspire you with your choice.
On the next level, youll find painted bedroom furniture for children and adults, with matching bedlinen, and at the back of the shop is the interior design service provided by Optic.
The romantic painted beds, the extra large armchairs big enough for two people and the glass-fronted display cabinets. And, if youre redesigning your bathroom, youll love the wide vanity unit with twin basins and open wooden base for towels and toiletries. The pretty bedlinen from Denmark caught my eye as well as some lovely white glazed china and an array of fragrant candles.
I especially like the extra tall wooden lamp bases topped with perfectly plain shades, but the show-stopper was the crystal candelabra that would make any dinner table very special.
