Karavan first opened its doors four years ago and for the people of Reigate it became a one-stop shop for that gorgeous country house look. I wanted to offer a unique experience to equal anything in London but specifically for Surrey, says owner Paul Barker. Having run his own advertising agency for many years, Paul opted out of the business in favour of his second passion, for home interiors, which is evident in the eclectic mix of his furniture and accessories.
This deceptively large store has an air of cool elegance. All the furnishings come in natural shades with small room settings flowing easily from living to dining areas, and bedroom to bathroom. The walls are lined with a variety of dressers and bookcases but nothing is fitted.
I wanted the store to be flexible so we could change the look regularly, says Paul. And with merchandise coming in monthly from around Europe, you can be sure to find something new on each visit.
The wide range of stylish furniture includes everything from a comfortable Chesterfield to a rather sleek, black leather sofa, as well as the popular weathered oak dressers and tables, and the more traditional polished oak and mahogany styles. Their best-selling piece is apparently a sleek, black lacquered console table designed by Karavan and made by a local craftsman.
Meanwhile, the understated bedding comes in quilted silk from India in muted shades of cream, grey and pale gold and the bathroom vanity unit is topped with a Belgium fossil material resembling marble. Lighting varies from elegant, chrome-based table lamps with black silk shades to a magnificent chandelier with metal leaves and crystal buds.
Among the beautiful accessories are crystal or silver candlesticks; attractive wooden boxes from Morocco; and some sweet smelling room diffusers from France.
An oh-so comfortable four-seater sofa covered in a soft brown linen-like fabric that just melts around you when you sit down, topped with stunning silk cushions in fuchsia and silver blue.
Worth a visit
Because youll find furnishings from the affordable to the luxurious that are unique to this must-see store.
